Conversion Gauntlets

In the heart of the grand ballroom turned archive, a pair of gauntlets shimmer with a pulsating glow. Gauntlets meant to harness residual radiation, converting it into a sustainable source of power. A mess of circuitry and ancient runes keeping this process stable, this gauntlet is active and connected to port.

The Concept

I created the conversion gauntlet for a props and weapons class, and it also serves as the main prop for my character, the Proprietor of the Ordinary Depository. As someone who frequently works with her hands and handles various radiating elements, she began to notice significant damage to her hands and a buildup of stagnant energy. To address this, she designed the conversion gauntlets to regulate the buildup and convert it from kinetic and thermal energy into usable electricity. Although the damage to her hands is chronic, these gauntlets allow her to function as a portable battery, which is incredibly convenient when testing out new creations.

The Breakdown

When modeling this prop I decided to keep it entirely in Maya, so most of the curved features were mostly achieved by curves/sweep mesh and soft selecting. A fair bit of this model was separated so when baked it in Marmoset I could have more control over parts of the material ID pass. Which made texturing the rings on the fingers and the base of the glove much easier on the same tile. Here is a render of the model unsmoothed, the model textured by ambient occlusion and then the final full texture.
